The Chicago White Sox are bad. The Chicago White Sox are so bad that if the MLB expunged their current 21-game losing streak and 14-game losing streak earlier in the season, Chicago would still be 26 games under .500. Instead, they are 27-88 with 47 games left to play. That's 61 games under .500.
The White Sox last won a baseball game on July 10. It's August 6.
Chicago has a .235 win percentage, lower than the MLB’s .243 average batting average in 2024. The White Sox are two losses from tying the MLB record for the most consecutive losses in MLB history, set by the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies. With 47 games remaining, Chicago will not be the favorite once.
After selling what remained of their team at the trade deadline, the White Sox are on pace to lose over 123 games this season, the most since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (per ESPN's Hembo).
Tonight, the White Sox play the 47-67 Oakland Athletics. The As are 20 games under .500 and are the favorite at (-220), which is the most across all MLB games tonight.
The White Sox are that bad.
The White Sox have been the favorite in just 7 of 115 games this season. They average just 3.07 runs per game (worst in the last 50 years) and have lost by an average of 2.2 runs per game in their 115 games this season, which is the largest average margin per loss since the 1932 Boston Red Sox.
White Sox manager Pedro Grifol, who has a career record of 88-189, spoke to the media after last night's loss. Grifol said, "It's 21 in a row, it sucks, it's painful, it hurts, you name it... it's not for lack of effort. Nobody wants to come out here and lose.”
Players do not want to lose. They have contracts to play for and roster spots to fight for, but at some point reality sets in. 21 straight losses. 61 games under .500. It's nearly impossible to lose as much as the White Sox have, and they are demoralized and dejected.
The 2024 Chicago White Sox will go down with the 2008 Detroit Lions (0-16), 2017 Cleveland Browns (0-16), and 2011 Charlotte Bobcats (7-59) as one of the worst teams in the history of sports. With nothing left to lose, except every game on the schedule, the White Sox should do what they do best: keep losing.
Chicago should try to lose every game remaining on their schedule and extend their losing streak to 68 games. A 68-game losing streak could be the most impressive, yet degrading feat in the history of sports. Why not go for it? Think about how much there is left to lose!
*Writer's note: the White Sox broke their 21-game losing streak on the same night this article was posted. Congratulations are in order.
